Mathushan lives near Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, with his elder brother and sister. In 2016, his father died from a heart attack and his mother, who at that time was a stay at home mom, became unable to feed her three children. Given the difficult situation, the eldest son dropped out of school and became the family’s breadwinner. He started working daily jobs to put food on the table and allow his 2 siblings to stay in school. Mathushan’s older brother was 15 when he dropped out of school. Now, Mathushan is concerned that if something happens to his brother, whether he gets sick or gets married, he will be the next one in line to abandoning school and becoming the family’s bread winner. Mathushan is a very good student, he excels in his education despite lacking school supplies and books. He feels very sad about his situation and especially about his father’s death. He dreams about a life free from hunger and poverty, a life where he and his siblings can go to school and have loving parents. A CERI sponsorship would allow Mathushan to stay in school and have a stronger and safer family.
