My name is Hana, and I live in a small village in Sri Lanka with my mother and sister. We have a small house with two rooms, a mini hall, and a small kitchen. My mother is currently unemployed. When I was six, my father was working abroad to provide for us. He was diagnosed with cancer and returned home for treatment. He is still undergoing treatment at a hospital and has had three operations, but his health has not improved. I haven’t seen him for a long time because he cannot come home due to his treatment. He last visited us a year ago when we were living with our grandparents. My grandfather does odd jobs to provide us all with food. My mom struggles mentally and financially due to my father’s illness. My little sister spends a lot of time with our grandmother. Our grandparents take care of us but can’t do much due to their financial hardship and lack of permanent income. They worry about us, especially my mother, as she is their only daughter. I am in the third grade and love going to school. I want to become an English teacher but worry I might have to drop out.
